The Volume

Overview

The Volume is a media and production company, focusing on podcasts and online shows that center around sports, entertainment and beyond.

Problem Statement

The history of The Volume’s focus has been in the world of sports and their website displayed this. As a company, their future is expanding to include entertainment, pop culture, comedians, and so much more. They needed a website that not only showed the versatility, but also the expansiveness of their portfolio, while still being simple and easy to navigate.

Final Product

Clean. Simple. Bold. These were the 3 main goals for this redesign. The content was really the star for this website, and since the hero was content light, I wanted the typography to shine.

One of the number one asks was to display how expansive the portfolio of shows is at The Volume with an additional ask of having a single page scroll, and each section being the same height/fit to the browser window.

A challenge.

We started with a couple different options of maximizing the space: featuring ~8 shows that would click out to a pop-up modal to show all, a variety of carousels…but nothing felt right. So we kept tweaking.

Finally, we landed on the seamless grid. This would maximize the amount of shows the user can see at once, while not burying any one show, an additional goal. It is also a better user experience, as ultimately the user has less clicks and/or wait time to click into any show they might want to learn more about. Lastly, it lends itself to an elegant solution for removing or adding shows over the span of time, as we included branded filler tiles that feel like intentional placements.
